The winter sun came out in Voorburg on Saturday November 13, as The Hague Barbarians (the combined teams from Wassenaar Warriors, WRC Te Werve and Voorburgse Rugby Club) took on the Duuvelse Wasps from Nijmegen. The teams had previously met each other in the first round of games with the Barbarians winning that game 17-19.

This was the first match for the Barbarians in the second round of the competition and the team looked a little rusty in the first half. The Wasps had improved their physicality and speed and ran some great lines which required a few try saving tackles from the Barbarians. It was the Wasps that scored first but weren’t able to convert. The Barbarians managed to strike back and Deven Donck scored close to the posts. Tijmen Pronk managing to convert to take the scores to 7-5. The Barbarians almost scored another but were pulled back for a forward pass just before they grounded the ball. Half time score: 7-5.

The second half started in the worse possible way for the Barbarians as the Wasps scored directly from the kick off with a great run to the far corner. The try stayed unconverted taking the score to 7-10. The Barbarians responded with 2 tries through Renzo Den Boer and Jesper Verbeek, Jesper converting one bringing the score to 19-10. The Wasps continued to put on the pressure though and scored the final try of the game but were unable to convert again.

It was great for the Barbarians to continue their 3 game winning streak but the result could have easily gone the other way for them in this very evenly matched contest.

Final Score: The Hague Barbarians 19 – Duuvelse Wasps 15
