On Tuesday the 25th of June, Wassenaar Warriors entertained the President of the Netherlands Rugby League Bond, Daan van Rossum and two top Rugby League coaches, Brett, and Yannick, ably assisted by Inge, for an introductory session to Rugby League. These guys have recently become new friends of the Warriors, having donated generously to the recent End of Season Prize Raffle.

Despite the football on TV, some thirty players turned up! We had Minis, Cubs, Juniors, Barbarian Colts, and our friends from Voorburg eager to find out what the differences are between the two codes and get a feel for a sport which developed from the union code. A full on and intense handling session ended in a very short game. Both players and coaches left the field, tired, happy, and curious to find out more. The Rugby League coaches were extremely impressed with the skill level across the board.

Did you know that Rugby League is a summer sport? It is a fantastic way to keep your hands on the right shaped ball during our off season! Also, did you know that most of the top-level international sides have Rugby League coaches for defence and offence? The subtle differences in the game make Rugby League knowledge essential in the modern game.

If you want to find out more, and maybe get some more experience, we have been offered the chance to train with the coaches again during the summer and they would love to come back to Wassenaar in the near future. More details available from Mac Nicholls.
