The Delft Barbarians (the Colts cluster team comprising of players from Voorburg Rugby Club, Wassenaar Warriors and Delft RC) played the Southern Warriors away in Etten Leur in  the second game of the 2023/24 season.

The conditions weren’t the best as rain had been falling most of the week and was still falling as the team was warming up. But the rain didn’t stop the Barbarians from scoring the first try of the game after 5 mins, taking the ball from a scrum and passing out wide to the wings to get it over in the corner. Southern Warriors equalized a few mins later though when they had a scrum on our 5 m line. Their scrum half running down the blind side totally unopposed.

The ping-pong continued with The Barbarians getting the next converted try from a penalty 10 metres out, then the Southern Warriors scoring again from close distance and going over in the corner. The sides seemed very well matched but, as with last week, our defence on the try line was ferocious but the Warriors just being too strong.  However, The Barbarians had the last word before half time when our resident intercept king got his hands on a stray pass and ran it over the line.

Half Time score: The Southern Warriors 10 – The Delft Barbarians 17

Discipline started to get away from us at the beginning of the second half. We had a yellow card against us for a high tackle, as well as a few penalties against us for high tackles and hand offs. Southern Warriors were on the attack. We had a great defensive display and held up one of their tries but when they had the ball they were just running through our players almost unchecked.

15 mins from the end we had our second yellow card and The Southern Warriors had their first. Southern Warriors broke the deadlock through and ran through our players to take the score to 15-17. The last 10 mins of the game saw some frustrating play, both sides giving away too many penalties for the game to flow. The Barbarians did compose themselves and attacked down the left hand wing with our scrum half getting the ball down. With the last couple of minutes The Barbarians were finally getting the ball wide and it paid off. We broke through and got the ball down in the corner.

Final Score: The Southern Warriors 15 – The Delft Barbarians 27

Second game and our first win of the season which was fantastic for the team. The conditions weren’t great and the team showed a lot of spirit and put in some good defending when The Warriors were on our line. Nice to see the team clicking together and scoring a bunch of tries as well!

Next week we’re away in Goes against the current pool leaders ZeBra Tovaal/RCC!
