In the last fixture of the year, the Benjis visited unfamiliar hosts ‘t Gooi Rugby Club in what looked like a normal Saturday match fixture thinly disguised as the Oliebollen Tournament. Whilst the Oliebollen was on full display at the clubhouse, these were rationed to the coaches and parents, while the boys had to played Rugby… shame!

First up, was Breda, who we’d beaten in at Etten Leur earlier in the season and from experience, were a tough and good rucking team. The Benjis started slowly but even then they got up to speed, they found Breda equal at the breakdown and tackling. A good try from Jamie from a pick and go behind a ruck looked like it had won the match for the Benjis but a very late, last action try by Breda secured a draw in a tough and competitive game.

After a half hour break, we played the host ‘t Gooi who were fielding two mixed teams. The Benjis were struggling to get there passing game going in the first half but that didn’t stop them defending well, with some crunching tackles by Hugo, Moritz and Jamie. ‘t Gooi continue to play well after the break but soon started to wilt under the Benjis constant pressure and firepower, who secured a 6-2 victory. The highlights being a defense splitting try by William from a nicely disguised pass by Alexander.

After the match we we’re informed that we wouldn’t be playing a forth and final game, as Castricum Rugby Club and decided to call it a day. With the schedule disrupted, ‘t Gooi decided to field an ‘A’ team to a vain attempt to beat the BSN Benji’s in the last match of the year. After conceding a try from ‘t Gooi’s first attack, the Benijs edge the first half 3-2. In the second half, the Benjis started to turn on the screws, an excellent move from the Benjis putting William through to score and all but killed off any last hope for ‘t Gooi and the tries soon stacked up for an 8-2 win.

The untouchables!

This leaves me to say congratulation to the Benjis squad for going undefeated this year, (54 wins and 2 draws!) which is a magnificent achievement given that fact we usually field two mixed teams. I’d also like to thank the rest of the coaching team who have contributed to the success of the team; Scott, Cedric, Manuel & Wayne and also our team manager Kathrin.
