The first match of the 2021/22 season for The Hague Barbarians, our combined Juniors team, was played against Gouda RFC at Te Werve – one of our ‘home’ grounds. For a couple of the team this was their first ever competitive game of rugby and it was a hard introduction to the game.

The Juniors from Gouda took a firm grip of the game in the first half and were the stronger side in the scrum and general play. The Barbarians had to work defensively but Gouda came out on top scoring 6 tries at the end of the first half.

The second half was better for the Barbarians, the scrum started to work better and the line outs clicked. The team put in a massive defense effort stopping several tries. The boys didn’t stop trying and carried on attacking, scoring a try 47 mins into the game. Gouda retaliated and managed to score 2 more tries towards the end of the game.

A difficult first game to the season, but one that the coaches and team can build on for the future! Final score: The Hague Barbarians 5 – RFC Gouda – 62.
